Probably managers are not surprised that there are several perallels between managing a company and an orchestra. Builing on this parallels we created our Conductor course program, which is a creative training for managers, in which the leaders of the processes can observe their own role.
The difficulty of leading often lies in the possibility of feedback, or even in the absence of it – not like in a symphony orchestra. The mistakes and wrong decisions of the conductor can cause chaos in a precisely working, immediately responsive orchestra, as a good conductor can become from a boss controlling tempo and volume to a real leader, if he or she is able to convince the diverse, hierarchically functioning, highly qualified musicians of the correctness of his/her concept with his/her instructions and presence. The result can be seen immediatley, but in a course of a few years too. We can see the long term effects of direct feedback and the construction at the same time.
How do the musicians from the inside see a leader like this? How can he/she divide his/her attention and expectations between the groups of instruments with unequal workload but equal responsibilities? How can he/she be persuasive and what are the unnecessary or counterproductive attitudes and instructions? All these questions will be on schedule on that special day, when company leaders can experience the dilemmas of the other side: sitting among the musicians in the lines of the orchestra, they can observe the attitudes, and communication skills of a hyperexponated manager, and the success or failure of the unusual solution attempts during unexpected situations and halts.
By the end of the rehearsal not just the sound of the symphony, but the legends and misbelieves about one-person leadership can find their place.
